Why does CPR certification expire?
CPR guidelines are updated regularly by the American Heart Association as new research emerges. The 2-year expiration exists to ensure certified individuals are trained on current techniques — not outdated methods that may be less effective.
For example, the AHA updated its guidelines on conscious choking response in October 2025. Renewal courses cover any changes so your skills and knowledge stay current.
